Summer Friends by Bernadette Gentry

learn-bluejay-at-suetThe back door is open to let in the morning’s coolness.
In the trees close by, the blue jays sit, awaiting my
appearance, and the crumbled bread I will give them.

I think how smart they are to know my routine!

They arrive before the squirrels, who also come to feed, but
must sleep in a few minutes extra and are only awakened by
the blue jays’ calling—whether it’s to me or their family
and friends, I’m not sure.
I guess, though, I like to think it’s for me!

I take joy in their presence because they are a part of the
great miracle of Nature and Creation.
And so, what otherwise might be a lonely summer day is
filled with fellowship of my friends, the birds.
