On The Cover – Diemand Farm Cows

Cover photograph by Christine V. Baran-Cox was taken last year at Diemand Farm in Wendell, MA.
Al Diemand purchased his 125-acre farm in 1936. He and his wife Elsie had 12 children and purchased another 75 acres to make room for their growing brood. They began by raising hormone-free broiler chickens for local grocery stores, then eggs from all natural hens, maple syrup, turkeys, and BBQ chicken dinners for parties, reunions and other events.
Today Al’s children raise and process their own poultry (indoor free range chickens and pasture raised free range turkeys) and farm fresh eggs.  The poultry is fed all natural feed. In addition, they have added grass fed beef. A small commercial kitchen creates homestyle foods from their own farm-raised meats and other local ingredients.
