Dear Friends,
I just wanted to remind everyone of a change that residents will notice on the Mass Pike at the end of October. The toll booths will no longer be manned and electronic tolling will be in effect. This program was announced back in 2012 and is set to go live in October. You will then drive along the Mass Pike and tolled using the electronic stations that you may have noticed go up along the route. This system is something new to our state but not new for some states. All electronic tolls have been in effect on the Tobin Bridge in Boston for some time. The easiest way to navigate the Mass Pike will be with an EZ Pass transponder. If you already have one, you will continue to use that for your electronic tolling. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has been trying their best to have giveaway events in most cities and towns around the commonwealth to better allow people to get transponders who need them. We were able to secure an event in Agawam in August, and there will be an event at the Southwick Town Hall Auditorium on September 16th from 10am to 2pm. In order to get a transponder you will need to fill out an application (available at the event) with your car information and any other transponders you will have on the account (up to 4 per account). You will also need to open your EZ pass account with a $20 dollar deposit either by a debit/credit card, check deposit, or cash payment. If you are unable to make the event in Southwick you can open an account online through the EZ Pass page on the Department of Transportation’s website at www.massdot.ma.state.us.
